The proprietary, lightweight and robust design of the Ezy-Logger™ allows Geologists and Field Technicians to quickly and easily make structural linear, alpha/beta measurements for most core samples and core sizes. Beta Angles: two end protractors are used to determine the beta angle of a structure. Firstly position the 0° mark over the core orientation line of the core sample. Then read the degree position of the nose of the elliptical structure by rotating clockwise from the core orientation (bottom of hole) line.

Alpha Angles: there are two side Alpha protractors (blue & red) that allow for easy visual measurement of the Alpha angle for a variety of rock colours. This is achieved by simply sliding the device up or down the core sample while holding it relative to the Beta angle (nose of the ellipse) and selecting the line of best fit on the side of the device that matches the structure being measured.

Lineations: these can be measured on open fractures by rotating the device on the core sample, so that the 0° position on the end protractor being used is over the nose of the ellipse for the open fracture being measured and then reading off the degree at which the lineations strike the protractor or exit the core sample.

Linear Measurement: the device can even provide limited linear measurements from one structure to the next of 0 to 95mm (0 to 3 inches) in length minimizing the need for a set of calipers while handling fragile core samples.

Accuracy: the simple and cost effective design allows the measurement of a range of core sizes to within 5° or better when used correctly. The device is a quick reference guide only and is not designed to be used as a calibrated instrument and should give confidence to any competent user in the basic measurement of structural trends and estimations while logging core samples of a variety of sizes and types.

Core Sizes: due to popular demand, it is now available in eleven sizes with some variants covering more than one core size.

Drill Core Structural Orientations using α & β angles
A computer program such as DIPS or the GEOTECH module in GEOACCESS 2000 is used to calculate (and plot) the True Drip and True Dip Direction of the structure. The diagrams below show how to measure α and β angles.

When logging core for which the orientations are suspects, note the different intervals of core for which you have used particular orientations; e.g. for interval 425 to 480 metres, you used the “bottom of core” orientation mark at 456m depth.

Be comprehensive with the logging (but not too extravagant). We are trying to determine if there are consistent sets of structures. There is therefore no need to measure every feature. If there are clearly a number of structures of the same type, in the same overall orientation, then take representative measurements.
